Car Alarms: DEI Valet 471T wont start car, keyless entry systems, car alarms

I bought a used car in 2003 that came with a remote starter installed.  The remove is a DEI Valet 471T.  Over the years, the remote's battery died.  Last year, I opened the remote and replaced the battery -- but now I find that it won't start the car.

Previously, I could start the car by pushing and holding both buttons on the remote.  Now, pushing both buttons makes the car's lights flash but the starter does not engage.

What do I have to do to fix this?
