Car Alarms: I Have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer and my alarm remote is not working, car alarm systems, mercury mountaineer

Question
When I bought my Mountaineer the alarm remote was ok and the batteries were kinda dying on me because only sometimes the remote would lock or unlock the doors, so I bought new batteries for the remote and put them in. Once I did that the remote doesn't do nothing now it won't turn the alarm on or off. When I open my car from the drivers side nothing goes off but when I open the passenger door the alarm goes off so what I do is turn the car on and the alarm goes off. It's the original alarm that came with the truck because the horn goes off and the lights blink. Can someone help me out and tell me how to configure the remote again or if something went wrong. Because when I push on both Lock and Unlock nothing happens the door locks wont go up or down. The batteries are set in ok because it states on the remote + side down. And that's how I put them in.
