QuestionI just got a 97 Camero and it started the first few times i got in now the security light is flashing and it will not start I check everything and it's all kosher. HELP Please.
AnswerI feel your pain. Really I do!
I get this inquiry at least 10 times a day,
and of course I am ONLY THE MESSENGER here
so please blame the engineers at GM.
It is a flawed and irritating system yes.
The way around it is also posted in several places
on my sites as well. A permanant bypass is suggested.
The IB-IM-PLJX Bypass kit is going to be
needed to get around this safely. (www.PASSLOCK2.com)
It matches the resistance level in the key switch
and allows for the fuel rail to engage with any key
you choose to use. See details on the site.
I wish there was an easy way to magically get it to
work without it, but this is what we have available
short of paying GM a bunch of cash to reset
a system that will likely need it again, and again.
The trick here now is to have the engine start and
run long enough to program the module. If the engine
can't start, then a bypass module will not function.
Tip:
try to do the "KEY IN THE IGNITION,
TURN TO THE ON POSITION, LEAVE FOR 10 MINUTES,
THE SEE IF CODE WAS RELEARNED & START CAN HAPPEN.
If it does, then NOW is the time to install the bypass,
program it, and then forget about it.
I know it's a catch 22 situation, but I am just
reporting the news here, don't shoot the messenger.
But if you can manage to get it started for
a little bit, then you're all set.
I'd bypass it and go from there with an after market
alarm to pick up the slack. Then no GM passlock issues to
worry bout down the line. If not, GM will need to reprogram
the PASSLOCK system, then you can bypass it for good.
Right now it's "Cart before the horse." I am afarid.
