Car Alarms: cougar car alarm problems, valet mode, mercury cougar

Question
Hello.  I have a 1998 Mercury Cougar and I have been having some car alarm issues.  My alarm was set off while I was sitting in my car with the car off (on my phone).  I tried to unlock the door from the inside without luck and then I put the key in the ignition to try to stop the alarm.  The alarm (honking) became louder and the hazards were on and immobilized my car.  My brother in law (who works at a dealership) said that he reset my alarm system but it goes off every other time that I open my door and went off today twice when I walked near it (and the door was unlocked).  If I use my keyless unlock button, the alarm goes off but that is the same button that also stops my alarm.  I purchased my car used and am not aware if this alarm is factory or not.  Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thank you,
Jennifer

Answer
Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes off, and the siren chirps twice.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in oposite direction,
key off.)

This should reset the alarm.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to valet mode.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart for
the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until it's safely removed.

If it does not work out this way, you will have
to replace the system with one you know how
to operate and what to expect.

Let me know what happens.
