Car Alarms: cant disable the car alarm, chevy cobalt, small fortune

Question
I bought a used 2005 chevy cobalt last year. The car came with only one remote. The problem is, the remote no longer works. I replaced the battery twice and took it to the dealer. To replace the remote and re-program it would cost a small fortune. This is a factory installed alarm and when I asked the service technician if it could just be permanently disabled he told me no. Is this true? If not, how could I do it without going to the poor house?

Answer
The dealer is correct, you can not permanently disable that system as it is a function of the Body Control Module.  However, I would recommend taking your car to an aftermarket shop, preferably one of the small shops but a Best Buy or Circuit City should be able to fix you up.  You can add an aftermarket keyless system to your vehicle with a data interface module and 2 new remote controls for about $200 installed.
