Car Alarms: Remote fob and cold weather, mercury montego, quality units

Question
I have a 2005 Mercury Montego with an aftermarket ford approved dealer installed remote start. Everything worked fine for the first year and a half. When winter set in (temperature    below about 32 degrees) the remotes supplied with the remote starter did not unlock the doors. The remotes that came with the car work just fine. My dealer said the ford approved installer is no longer ford approved and so he diagnosed and supposedly replaced  a module at the dealership. The repair at the dealership did not fix the problem. Ford motor customer service says there is no fix at the present time. When the weather is warmer or once the car interior is warmed up the remotes unlock the doors just fine. Any Ideas? Thanks

Answer
The "Ford approved" systems are made by code alarm.  They are not what I would consider quality units as they are known for having remote problems as well as various other problems.  I would suggest either a replacement system, or taking your vehicle to a local alarm shop and seeing if they would be willing to take a look at it for you.  Most shops will either recommend replacing the system with a better quality one, or charge an hourly rate to repair it.
