Car Alarms: erratic behaviour of 1999 Ford Windstar Secruity system, 1999 ford windstar, ford windstar

Question
the security system in my van has begun acting up after years of no problems. It seems to now be auto-arming and locking the doors without request, giving a few short beeps on turning off the car, alarming when I open the door after turning off the car, etc. I have twice been locked out of a running car when the door closed after starting, while I cleared the windows of ice.
It didn't do this for the first 6-7 years of ownership. No damage to remote door unlock device on key chain. car always starts correctly.
Any ideas? could the battery in my keyless entry device need changing?

Answer
Your battery may need changing, but there is no
real explaination for why the alarm would
after 5-6 years, passively arm when the door shuts
if it never did before.

My suggestion here is to go in and out of
Valet/overide/service mode, and reset it.
If the problem persists, then you may want to explore
the trouble further, or replace the system with
something reliable, and no surprises.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, found under the
dash area, (push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it.

Let me know if this helped at all.
