Car Alarms: 98 Legacy Outback Alarm Going Wacky - Again, subaru legacy outback, subaru legacy

Question
My 1998 Legacy Outback continues to have the same (repeating) alarm problem -- it goes off whenever it wants to, and seems VERY sensitive to noise.  This is the third time with this problem, is there a permanent fix short of replacing it?

The first time, the car was about 1 year old.  I took it to the dealer, who replaced it free, and then told me "these things break ALL the time, so we only replace it ONE time. In fact, Subaru changed vendors because these are so bad".  Great.  I asked about replacing it with a unit from a '99 (the current model then) and he said "the new ones don't fit the 98's, you have to buy a new '99 car completely".  Right.

But, the alarm worked for another 2 years or so, then acted up again.  I took it to a different dealer, who replaced my alternator (I guess a factory recall or ?).  Strangely, the alarm worked again for about another 2 years, even though it was never touched during the service of the alternator.

Now, it's going wacky again.  Same problem, VERY sensitive to noise, alarm sounds when cars pass it EVEN when the alarm is NOT turned on! (?)  Doing online research, I see that for my car, there should be a box under the steering area (dash) with an adjustment screw, but I cannot find that box on my car.

Is there really no factory fix possible?  Can a dealer find and/or adjust this thing?  Or do I just disconnect it and ignore it?

Or -- is there a REALLY simple to install but effective aftermarket replacement?

Thanks!
Curt

Answer
Well Subaru should know better.
Any how, I would opt to disarm it permanantly
then do put in a nice basic car alarm/keyless
entry. I have several that would be
considered good or better then what you
are currently using, and is relatively an
easy task. I will provide the know
how with the notes for this installation
on a 98 Subaru Legacy Outback, if you do
the installation. Deal?

Have a look specifically at the Precision 200
system at my car alarm store (www.carprotector.com).

This one has all you will need in the box to replace
and exceed the system you have now and can be
installed with some basic tools and tape.

Go look and then let me know if you are ready
to get started. In the mean time, let's permanatly
disable your current system.

Locate the FACTORY ALARM DISARM|green/lt. blue wire|-|
in the drivers kick panel, splice into it, then
put this wire to a ground point on the chassis.

That solves the current problem, but creates another.
This car is TOOOOOOOOOO easy to steal.

Where do you live?  (lol)
