Car Alarms: 2000 camry alarm goes off, dash area, shock sensor

Question
Hi,

My car alarm has been going off for apparently no reason and shuts off by itself shortly afterwards.  I thought it might be from wind, but my husband took it to work and said the alarm was going off in the middle of the day with good weather conditions.  He thought that maybe the car was at an angle on the driveway and that was causing the problem.  It's a factory installed alarm, so Good Year said to see the dealer.  Is it preferable to have the dealer fix the problem or just disable the alarm?  What's most cost-efficient?

Answer
Well, the good news is that this is not
an OEM factory alarm. Did not have one for this
year. Probably installed aftermarket at the dealership.

It also appears that the alarm's shock sensor
is set up way too high.

Look around under the dash for a button or,
a toggle type switch. This is the Valet/overide.

In this case, I would suggest putting
the system into valet, and take it to your
local car alarm shop, pay a little bit
to have them locate the sensor under the dash area,
and turn it down or, off.

Allright, give this a shot:

Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid, and the siren chirps once.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in opposite direction,
key off.)

This should then reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start it. At this point,
the only thing working would be
keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped.

Then you should be able to take it
to the install shop and have the sensor
reset cheaply.

Just Repeat these steps above when they are done,
to place it back to usable armed mode.

That should do it.

Let me know what you find.
