Car Alarms: Trouble Shooting Viper 850, brain box, viper systems

Question
I recently purchased a vehicle with a non-functioning Viper 850 alarm. The previous owner said it was disabled during engine servicing and he was not able to re-arm it afterwards.

I've tried the generic valet switch process without luck. The remote door locks don't even work. It will, however, intermitently arm and alarm so I'm thinking the system is basically functional.

I would like to know how check to see if the remote transmitter is programed to match up with the alarm reciever - can I go through a re-programming process? (not just the valet switch)

Answer
Sorry, but I am unfamiliar with Viper systems.
Not a big fan so I never got into they're product
line, or the programing there of.

From the sounds of it, the issue is at the power source.
But If it was powered down, it would not be intermitent.
If a fuse was removed, it would not be intermitent.
The other thought here is the ground was removed
and left free hanging, occassionally touching metal.

However, I can't inspect it from here. I think this
was a fairly good system too, so my suggestion is if
you want to salvage this alarm, that you contact
a DEI salesman/installer near you to reinstate
the alarm, explain & re-program the system.

Start at www.DIRECTED.com to see if you can locate
a dealer, or www.installsupport.com to see if a
DEI guy may be there as well.

My last thought would
be to find the brain box under the dash area,
and unplug it. Then replace it with a better,
newer and UNDERSTOOD FROM THE BEGINING, alarm system.

This will make for a better overall experience
with your new ride. The only reason I suggest
this is that I know the run around that most
likely will transpire for you next,
trying to get any help from Viper.

It's more likely, it will cost you more
to get it up to snuff, then to get it replaced.

Anyhow, good luck with it.
I know it would be nice if it all
comes together without any cost, but
I kinda doubt it.
