Car Stereos: Rear speakers very quiet, internal amplifier, stock speakers

Just bought a Pathfinder with a Sony Explode head unit and stock speakers.  The highs in the front work fine but the 4 door speakers only produce a whisper.  There is no bass in the vehicle.  I'm not sure if I need a new head unit or if there may be another problem?  Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, this is one of those things that could be any number of issues.

The first thing I would do is suggest that maybe there's a factory amplifier and it's not working to spec.  You didn't include the year of your Pathfinder, so I don't have the ability to tell you if that's a possibility or not.

The thought process I'm having here is that the highs are working off of the internal amplifier in the Sony and are working fine, but the door speakers are running off an amplifier, and it's dying/dead or has a bad connection somewhere.
