Car Stereos: Rear Deck Mounted Speakers & Sound Quality, 2004 chevy cavalier, quality greetings

Question
Greetings from Arizona!
I just finished replacing the rear speakers in my 2004 Chevy Cavalier and have a question about rear deck mounted speakers and sound quality. It just seems like so much sound and its quality is being lost when speakers are installed in this manner. Why is it acceptable practice for speakers to be mounted in such a way that they are completely exposed on literally all sides with the entire trunk being the enclosure, if you will. Would it make a difference to create some sort of enclosure around the portion of the speaker that hangs in the trunk?
Thanks in advance for enlightening me on this subject. I have to assume that sound quality is diminished very little with this type of installation since a large percentage of vehicles use this method.

Answer
Hi Steve,

Because the kind of speakers that go into the deck of a trunk aren't typically powerful enough, nor do they reach a frequency low enough where airspace and baffle design are a real concern, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The sound would be better if you had a separate sealed enclosure for the speakers, but generally you'll find it's just not worth it for companies that econoboxes.

Most high-end cars don't have speakers in the decks; they're in the doors and in other spaces where they can enclose them relatively well (like door panels).
