Car Stereos: XM Radio install, dodge grand caravan, chevrolet hhr

Question
Hi - I have a 2009 Chevrolet HHR LT with an XM antenna.  The receiver doesn't have XM, but has an AUX IN.  I also have a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan with Sirius radio.

I want to:
- deactivate Sirius in the Caravan
- activate an XM OXYX (removable# radio which I can move     between the HHR and the Caravan whenever I choose

The ONYX comes with a kit which I can use to install.

HOWEVER ... I'd really like to use the existing antennas.  I went to Best Buy and the installer wasn't sure if I could or what was entailed.  #His answers didn't impress me - not sure I want him learning on my install#

Can I access the antennas on the cars and put adapters on them which could plug into an ONYX?  How difficult might this be?  #I've installed a couple of car stereos in the past, but it's been a while and technology has changed in most areas, so I'm a bit shy)

Answer
Hi Kevin,

I'm sorry about the long delay in answering your question.

Using the factory satellite antenna with an after-market universal tuner is something you can do in theory.  The main complication is the location of the factory satellite tuner.

When an OEM satellite tuner is installed in the vehicle, the antenna isn't something you can easily unplug and route to a different location.  It will be bundled with the rest of the vehicle wire harness, and won't be practical to isolate.  Your best option is to use an XM antenna extension cable, connect it at the factory tuner location, and route it to the Onyx mounting location.

A 20' XM extension cable is available; the part number is SBRGT-20.

I wasn't able to find very reliable information on the factory tuner locations in your vehicles, but it's likely that the XM tuner in the HHR is located in the cargo area; probably above the passenger side wheel well.  In the Caravan, the satellite tuner may be located behind the lower central instrument panel and storage compartment.

Hope this helps!
