Car Stereos: 06 grand prix radio amp, monsoon sound system, line output converter

Question
QUESTION: Coming from the factory speaker wires, would I be able to use an amp/eq and mount amp in trunk? 2006 grand prix

ANSWER: Hi Barry,

Sorry about the delay in answering your question.

You can use an after-market amplifier or equalizer with the factory radio, connecting to the speaker outputs; but you may need an adapter called a line output converter.  Many after-market amplifiers include a high-level input feature, which allows the amp to be connected directly to the factory speaker wiring for an audio input.  An equalizer, however, it less likely to include this feature.  However, you can still connect the low-level inputs of an equalizer of amplifier if you use a device called a line output converter.  This connects to the factory speaker wires and produces a low-level output in the form of RCA jacks.

If your Grand Prix is equipped with a stock Monsoon sound system, you wouldn't want to connect to the speaker outputs from the Monsoon amplifier.  Instead, your best option would be to tap into the signal wires between the factory head unit and Monsoon amp.  If you don't have the Monsoon option, then you can connect directly to the speaker wiring at any point in the vehicle.

Hope this helps!

Brian

QUESTION: How do I determine if I need that adapter and which wire colors? I need to connect the wires somewhere under the dash for the door speakers. Thanks,Barry

Answer
Hi Barry,

Does the device you're installing have an input designed for connection to factory speaker wires, or does it only have RCA inputs? If the only inputs are RCA jacks, then you'll need the line output converter.

The easiest place to find the front speaker wires is right at the radio plug.  The colors will be tan (+) and gray (-) for the left speaker, and light green (+) and dark green (-) for the right speaker.  Each wire pair will be located side-by-side in the factory radio plug.

Hope this helps!
