Car Stereos: sebring infinity sound, sebring lxi, infinity sound

Question
I have a 2001 sebring lxi with infinity sound. The stock head unit does not have pre-amp output for my jl audio setup, so I have replaced the head unit with the harness adapter and dash faceplate kit.  I have also connected the blue power wire to the factory amp and gotten sound. Finally, how do I resolve the issue of the built in crossover producing only bass to the still stock infinity front door speakers.

Answer
Hi Travis,

If you want the door speakers to play a full-range audio signal, then you'd need to bypass the factory amplifier and drive the speakers directly from the head unit.  This isn't something I'd recommend if you're planning to keep the factory speakers in place, especially if the dash tweeters are working properly.  Generally, factory speakers will perform best if you keep them connected to the factory amp, with the built-in crossovers.  If you're upgrading the speakers, though, it's probably a good idea to bypass the amp.

Your Infinity amplifier is located under the front passenger seat.  The easiest way to bypass it is to locate the front channel input wires and door speaker output wires, cut them away from the amplifier plug, and connect them together.  The front input wires are connected to your new head unit's front speaker outputs through your adapter harness, so if you connect them to the door speaker output wires at the amplifier, then the door speakers will be connected directly to the head unit through the factory wiring.  Note that doing this will also kill the sound to the dash tweeters.

Here are the wire colors at the factory amp:

Front speaker inputs:
left front (+): dark green
left front (-): brown/red
right front (+): violet
right front (-): dark blue/red

Door speaker wires:
left front (+): light green/violet
left front (-): light green/black
right front (+): light blue/violet
right front (-): light blue/black

Hope this helps!
