Car Stereos: sub woofer, pitched whine, range speakers

i hooked up my amp and speaker to my stereo and it makes a noise when all volume is off what can i check or do to make it stop

Hi Mike,

I might need some more specific information to answer this one:  what kind of amp and speaker?  Are you talking about a subwoofer, or front or rear full-range speakers?  Are you only hearing the noise through the speaker that's connected to the amplifier, or through other speakers too?  Can you describe the noise--is it a high-pitched whine that varies with the engine RPM, or something else?  Is the noise only present when the engine is running, or is it also there when the engine is off and the key is in the "accessory" position?
