would antenna adapter be needed for sony xplode cdxf5510 going into 1986 chevy pu with factory antenna plug

Hi Jim,

You wouldn't need an antenna adapter in an 86 Chevy pickup; the existing antenna plug should be the standard size for an after-market head unit.  It's possible that there's a defect in the antenna or somewhere along the antenna line.  

If the head unit is tuning in stations--ie, if it will stop on a frequency when using the "seek" function--but not playing any audio, then the problem is likely to be internal to the head unit.  On the other hand, if it's failing to stop on any stations, then it might be an antenna problem.
