Car Stereos: amp/sub hookup, sony xplode amp, ohm impedance

Question
i have a sony xplode amp Model# xm-zr1852, and an alpine swr-1242D 12 inch sub. Can i hook both jumpers up to the sub and run this amp in 2 ohm? Just not positive if this amp is 2 ohm stable...

Answer
Hi Brian,

You can't use the amp with a 2-ohm load if you're using it in "bridged" mode.  The minimum impedance for a bridged amplifier is 4 ohms.  The amplifier is only 2-ohm stable in stereo (2-channel) mode.

The best way to use this amplifier with your Alpine sub is to wire the sub's voice coils in series, for an 8-ohm load, and connect it to the bridged amp.  This is still far from ideal, because the 8-ohm impedance will reduce the amp's power output.  You'll probably get about 200 watts RMS with this setup.  However, there's really no better way to use this particular amplifier with your sub.

Hope this helps!

Brian
