Land Rover Repair: service engine soon light on, land rover service, service mechanic

Question
Just bought a used 140,000 mile Land Rover Discover sport 11 model. While driving "service engine soon" light came on. Called Land Rover service dept they said more than 1/2 the time the gas cap is not tight enough. Tightened it and no change. Will the dash light go off on its own if problem corrected or does a service mechanic have to reset it. Also I took out a bulb in the over head rear light. Will that show up as a warning via "service
engine soon" light?

Thanks,
Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

my suggestion would be to start looking for an independent LR mechanic near your area.  If the fault is as simple as your dealer stated, the SES light should have extinguished.  Chances are there are other faults that have been triggered and they will need to be cleared manually.

LR electrics can sometimes seem mysterious but I doubt the bulb replacement triggered the SES light.  IF a short was to take place, it could affect other electrics and possibly trigger some faults but this is a remote possibility.

Find an independent shop now while your troubles are small and manageable.  Resetting your fault codes should not cost you too much and it could reveal potential problems that could get more costly if left unanswered.

If you need help located some, drop me an email and include the city you would like to find an independent shop.  I'll try to find some for you.

Best of luck with your Disco purchase (sounds ok so far ... )
