Car Stereos: Amp ohm output, ohm subs, ohm speaker

Question
Hi Brian, I am looking at using a 4 channel amp to run two svc 4ohm subs. Im going to bridge the amp into two channels but was wondering what the ohms would be after bridging? the amp is 25wattsx4 @ 4ohm and 50wattsx4 @ 2 ohm. thanks Matt

Answer
Hi Matt,

The impedance rating (ohms) is a characteristic of the subwoofer.  It doesn't change when you connect the sub to a bridged amp.  A 4-ohm speaker is always a 4-ohm speaker, no matter how it's wired to an amplifier.

In your case, your best option is to connect each "bridged" channel to a single sub. Your amplifier's power rating should also include a bridged rating; for example, an amplifier that's 25x4 @ 4 ohms, and 50x4 @ 2 ohms, will usually carry a rating of 100x2 @ 4 ohms bridged.  So I'm guessing that each of your 4-ohm subs will get 100 watts from the amp in bridged mode.

Hope this helps!

Brian
