Car Stereos: car audio, high output alternators, chevy tahoe

Question
i am running two Lazar vibe class d 1200 watt amps in a 1999 chevy tahoe powering 4 kicker 12" cvrs with a stock 100 watt amplifier powering two batteries do u think i need move voltage in the alternator if so what do you suggest

Answer
Hi,

It's very difficult to say whether your current system is too much for your stock alternator.  If you're generally using the system for normal music listening, then the amplifiers' average current demand will be quite a bit less than their peak capacity; in this case your original alternator might do just fine.  However, your description of the system makes me think that you're looking for lots of bass output at high levels.  If you routinely crank it up, then you'll probably need an alternator upgrade.  (Note that you'll need to increase the alternator's current capacity, not the voltage).

Whether you choose to replace your alternator or not, I'd definitely consider upgrading your charging system wiring.  Installing heavier-gauge wiring on the three main conductor paths will help eliminate voltage drops caused by under-sized factory wires.  The three wires to upgrade are:
-the wire between the negative battery terminal and the vehicle chassis
-the wire between the positive battery terminal and the alternator's output terminal
-the wire or ground strap between the engine block and the chassis.

If you decide to upgrade, I'd look for an alternator rated at 200 amps or higher.  A good source for high-output alternators is Ohio Generator  (www.ohiogen.com).

Hope this helps!
