Car Stereos: Double din/Jetta, metal fab shop, stereo shop

Question
Scott: bought used 2002 Jetta that included a brand new Pioneer FH8000PT(?)Blue tooth radio. Now finding out that it is next to impossible to mount that in the OEM Monsoon space. Thought it was as easy as a double din bracket but I guess there is no way to lag it in? Any ideas w/o mucho $$$, Pete W.

Answer
Pete,  I researched your car, and you are right.  They only make an adapter kit for the standard DIN size radios.  Without a standard kit, a stereo shop will charge quite a bit to fabricate a mount.  Most shops won't even do it.  If you can find a local shop to fab an adapter, it will probably cost $150 or so.  You may be able to get in contact with a metal fab shop and get it done for around $50, but it may not be aesthetically pretty.  I wish I had a better answer for you.  If you like to work with wood and fiberglass, you can make your own bracket.  Personally, I work in a machine shop, so I would probably build my own bracket out of metal at work.  It really is too bad, because the adapter kit that is available for your car has the 2" opening, then a 2" pocket.  Who wants a big pocket right in the middle of the dash?!  Anyways, call around your town, and see what you can find.  You may find a shop willing to do it at a discounted rate, if you let them take a couple of pictures of it and use you for a reference.  Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.  Hope this helps, Scott
