Car Stereos: FIber optic wiring, amp fuse, monsoon system

Question
Ok i am installing An after market amp and subs into a 2001 VW Passat. It has fiber optic wiring how would i hook up a LOC to that car to use the factory Monsoon single din head unit.  and where do you suggest i hook the remote turn on wire to in the car.  and i have installed for about a year now but i thought i would ask around about this wiring so any help would greatly be appreciated..

Answer
Hi Darren,

Your best option in this vehicle is to connect the line-out converter directly to the output wires at the Monsoon amplifier in the trunk.  This is almost always the best option when you're installing a LOC in a vehicle with a factory amp, even without the fiber-optic wrinkle.

I think the Passat Monsoon system includes a factory subwoofer; if so, then you can identify the wire colors at the sub and look for the same wires at the amp output; or just connect directly to the wires at the subwoofer.

There's no true amp turn-on wire in a Volkswagen with Monsoon, so you'll need to tap your remote wire into an accessory power source.  I've seen a few of these with 12v power outlets in the trunk; if yours is equipped, then you can test the outlet and see if it works with constant or accessory power.  If it's accessory, then you can tap your remote wire into the wiring at the back of the outlet.  Otherwise, you should be able to tap into an accessory fuse at the vehicle fuse box, on the end of the driver's side dash.  In the past, I think I've tapped into a fuse position labeled with a key symbol in the fuse box guide.  It's a good idea to put your own 1-amp fuse on the remote wire, near the power source, wherever you choose to tap it; that way if your wire gets shorted it shouldn't affect the vehicle circuit.

Hope this helps!
