Car Stereos: no sound with cd player but with radio, dodge durango, laser cleaning

Question
QUESTION: Why cant I hear any sound on the cd player even while it is reading the cd but can hear the radio when I put a manufactured cd unit into my 2000 Dodge Durango?

ANSWER: If the radio works fine, and you cannot hear any sound from a cd from an OEM stereo; the unit is probably bad.  There really isn't any other explanation.  Be sure and check a couple of different cds, especially one bought with music already on it.  If no cds are working, the cd player is not working properly.  In a few instances, a laser cleaning cd will clean the laser enough to make the player work, but it sounds like yours is beyond that point.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: I tried three different cd players. What about the blue and white wire? I heard the REM wire has something to do with the sound from the cd player? Is this true and what does it go with?

ANSWER: Is the cd player separate than the radio?  I assumed they were the same unit.  If they are different units, the blue and white wire from the radio is sometimes used to turn the cd player on.  However, I prefer to insulate the blue and white wire, and use it for nothing, because any short to that wire will normally fry the amp in the stereo.  Instead, I splice my peripheral units into the same red wire and yellow wire that I use on the radio.  This assures that the line is fused and nothing can get ruined.  If the cd player and radio are just one unit, you want to just insulate that blue and white wire and don't use it for anything.  Let me know if one unit or two piece.  -Scott

QUESTION: Yes it is one unit. He tried capping that blue and white wire. Still same result

Answer
So, it is one unit.  You have tried 3 different ones.  The radio works fine in all three, and the cd player does not play any cd.  I have heard of alot of problems, but I have never heard of such a problem.  Let me explain.  The unit only has one amplifier built in, and it only has one set of output wires.  If the output wires put out power from the radio, they should put out power from the cd player.  If they don't, then there has to be a problem with the cd player.  The unit does not send radio sounds out through one set of wires and cd sounds out through another set.  Did you try different cds?  CDs that are bought with artist music on them already.  Nothing homemade.  If it looks like the cd counter is moving, like it is playing the cd, there could be one of two problems.  First, there could be a setting in the unit that is set to "mute" or something that is causing the player to not put out power from the cd player.  Second thing is probably a short of some sort between the cd player and the amplifier inside the radio.  If none of the tests work, I would suggest trying to hook up another type of unit, so you can rule out the problem being some type of setting not being found.  After you try a different kind of unit, let me know what you get. -Scott
