Car Stereos: Sub Wiring, kenwood kac 7202, rms output

Question
brian,

i don't know if you remember, but awhile ago i asked you about wiring 2 mb quart dwf-304 subs to a kenwood kac-7202 amp. there was a wiring option i wanted to ask you about. if i wired the voice coils parallel and then run the subs stereo to the amp (1 sub per channel), what would my ohm load & rms wattage be? normally the amp is rated at 150x2 at 4 ohm and 230x2 at 2 ohm. the reason i ask is because this is how i currently have them wired and my amp keeps shutting off.

initially i wanted to wire the coils in series then parallel to the amp as you suggested but i don't have the bar jumpers that should have come with it to do so. i wondered if it was ok to use a piece of speaker wire as a substitute jumper?

thanks in advance brian,
erik

Answer
Hi Erik,

In the wiring configuration you described, the load impedance would be 2 ohms per channel and the RMS output would be 230 watts per channel.  This is certainly within the recommended parameters for the amp and the subs, so I'm not sure why it's shutting off on you.

A piece of speaker wire should work perfectly well in place of the jumper.

Thanks

Brian
