Car Stereos: Subwoofer Rattling, sony xplod subwoofer, gasket material

Question
Hi, about a month ago I bought a 12" 1500W Sony Xplod Subwoofer.  About a few weeks ago, I started hearing a rattling noise coming when I played music.  This didn't happen with every song I play, only certain ones (I guess it's specific frequencies?)

I found that if I push down on the top of the subwoofer box, the bass becomes smooth again.

What do you think is the problem/how do you think I should fix it?

Answer
Hi Shayan,

I think the problem is caused, one way or another, by the subwoofer box.

It sounds like the box isn't as rigid as it should be.  One of the box panels is beginning to resonate with certain frequencies.  Alternately, the box seams may no longer be airtight; you could be hearing noise from air escaping through a loose seam.

There are a few things you can try.

I'd use some type of caulking agent/sealant on all the interior seams.  You might also try installing a gasket material (like adhesive-backed weatherstripping) between the subwoofer basket and the box itself.  Don't use a hardening caulk between the sub and the box, or you'll never be able to remove the sub again.

If you use a caulking compound inside the box, make sure it's fully cured before you re-mount the subwoofer; some sealants may emit fumes that can be harmful to the subwoofer's surround material.

If you can identify a box panel that's vibrating, you can try building in a wooden brace for more support.

Hope this helps!
