Car Stereos: how to install a cd player and a amplifier in a 86 Monty Carlo ls, monty carlo, salvage yard

Question

Answer
Ian,  To install cd player headunit, you need a mounting kit to adapt the radio to your car.  Also, you need a wire harness adapter to coordinate all the wires from the radio making sure they get to the correct wires in the car.  If the factory radio plug has been cut out of your car already for some reason or another, I would suggest going to a local salvage yard and buying a factory plug and splicing it back into place under the dash.  Once you have the mounting kit and wire harness adapter, the headunit installation is pretty self-explanatory.  As far as an amp, it depends on an amp for high/mid speakers or amp for subwoofers?  If amp for high/mids, then you would reroute the speaker wires coming from the radio to the amp, then from the amp back to the wire harness adapter.  Then, splice power wire into red wire going to radio, and switched wire into yellow wire going to radio.  Then, wire negative to closest ground point.  If wiring a sub amp, you would place it in the trunk.  Splice into the wires going to the rear speakers to go to the amp.  Run red and yeallow wires from radio power to trunk area to power and switch the amp.  Negative to nearest ground point.  Hope this helps, Scott
