Car Stereos: Pontaic Grand Am 2004, pontaic grand am, voltage fluctuations

Question
Hi Justin,
I recently had a car starter installed in my wife's 2004 Grand AM, after the installation the LED display is only partially working.
Can the LED's be replaced? Can I buy the display only? Is it normal that this would fail at the same time as the installation as he only took the radio out but didn't disconnect it?
Thanks
John

Answer
Hi John,

I'm assuming you mean the LEDs in the head unit.  Is it normal that it'd fail at the same time?  Not necessarily 'normal', but it is possible.  LEDs almost always die as a result of voltage fluctuations or cold solder joints, as they rarely get used as long as their mtbf would allow for.

If it's an actual LED, unless you really know electronics, you'll likely need to just replace the HU entirely, as repair is not easy.
