Car Stereos: car audio - factory Mazda Protege (98), mazda protege, best buy

Question
My stereo (FM/AM/CD) suddenly stopped working (i.e. no sound in either radio or CD mode), however power is going to the unit - the time displays, the radio channeling buttons function, etc.  There are 2 fuses linked to audio and neither appear to be blown.  These 2 fuses also are linked to other auxiliaries that are working properly; thus I assume the fuses are not the problem.

I have never had issues with my speakers nor experienced any kind of "noisy" issue (static, hiss, popping, etc), and therefore assume the speakers are not the problem either.

For some time before this sudden death, the CD player would randomly behave badly and seemed to play CDs whenever it felt like doing so rather than when I wanted to listen to a CD. There was no rhyme or reason to this - the same CD would play one day and not the next. Perhaps this is a clue to the problem.

I tried to research this site for similar problems/solutions before submitting this question (apologies for repetition), and in doing so have seen this may point to a short in the device itself. I would greatly appreciate being pointed in the right direction. At my wits end with an also defunct boombox in my passenger seat, I am considering taking it to Best Buy or similar for a new unit - but it would be great to know if that's not necessarily the best route to take.

Thanks so much in advance for any information you can offer!

Answer
kren,  I appreciate the research and detail you have provided.  As you mentioned about the cd player working sometimes and sometimes not, I would be sure there is no cd loaded in the unit before writing it off completely.  If there is no cd loaded, and there is still no sound, it is probably a short inside the radio and a trip to Best Buy is in order.  You have done a great job in researching your problem and explaining it to me.  I am sorry I haven't got any better news for you.  Good Luck, Scott
