Car Stereos: amps, watt amp, speakes

Question
i have a set of 100 rms speakers and a set of 250 rms speakers with a head unit that puts out 50 watts, i am thinking of purchasing a 4 channel 600 watt max amp, will this cover the wattage of my speakes well enough to get a good sound...if not what would you suggest?

Answer
Hi Andy,

You don't have to match the wattage of the speakers exactly.  You just need to buy an amp that will adequately power the speakers.  If you wanted to go 100% on every speaker, you'd likely need a ~1000 watt amp, so you could get 250w per channel, and then just turn down the speakers with only 50w RMS handling.

That said, it's unnecessary, as you won't ever want to run them at 100% all the time.  Your 600w should be just fine throwing 150w to the 250w, and with the gain turned down to the 50w speakers, and getting the sound you want.
