Car Stereos: choosing right wattage amp, watts rms, rockford fosgate

Question
I have 2 seperate left and right Rockford Fosgate truck boxes. They are factory built boxes each with an 8'' subwoofer, mid, and tweeter. Model # is BTR-83. They say PWR handling is 150 watts. I assume that is for each sub. I am confused about what size amp to buy. Do I need a 300w  or a 150w ? These will be no other aftermarket speakers I am adding. Thanks, Andy

Answer
Hi Andy,

Yes, the 150 watt rating will be per speaker, and fortunately, the company has reported tham as their true RMS rating, and not some made up 80 BAZILLION WATTS! rating that many companies use to try and sell their stuff now.  Armed with that information, youll want to buy an amplifier that can provide between 250 and 400 watts RMS power.  You have some leeway, as you won't be blasting it 100% all the time, and as long as it can provide the power cleanly without distortion you should be good to go.
