Auto Racing: Fuel Tank Return Line, Part. 2:, dodge a100 van, life insurance policies

Question
Hi, someone asked about a fuel tank return line, and you deflected the answer as he had a carb not fuel injection.
Well, I will be installing EFI, and have a standard stamped gas tank with the seam running horizontally - it's for a Dodge A100 Van - (don't ask! ha ha).
Where should the return line go in, and does it need a tube or can it just be a flush mounted A/n fitting.  My
million dollar question is how high above the bottom surface of the tank should it be?
Thanks.

Jeff Williams.

Answer
Hi Jeff:

I probably deflected the question because I don't usually answer questions about street equipment.  Carbs however , don't usually have return lines, only injection systems.

In your case, I would place the return line anywhere it's convenient to stick it in. Preferably higher than lower to avoid internal pressure interfering with the return process. All it does is 'return' excess fuel from the injection circuit to the tank.
It would be best to have it welded or brazed in place, if you can find a welder that will even discuss it with you. Gas tanks are bad news.

If you are using a stamped steel tank in a race car, I would like to be named as beneficiary on your life insurance policies. The thought gives me shivers.  I HAVE been in a bad fire and it isn't a damn bit of fun.

Good luck.
