WOW! Thank you, i don't know anything about trans, eather. Very good inforation, and do you think the 351w, is one of fords best?  And stroke the 351w or 390?. Which moter would you use for seat of the pants esceleration, even if it is different than these two?  Again Thank You Very Much, Guy

Thank You very much, but i was under the impression that a stroker motor does not get along with a truck? And this stroker motor will have low end hp?. Like 0-70 in 5 or 6 seconds, i am not interested in speed, like going 120 or so on the interstate,just seat of the pants acceleration, 0-70. So lets say i found a 390 in a parts truck, would it be better to stroke it than a 351w? I just picked the 351w because it was supposed to be one of the best motors ford made?. And finally, if i can stroke a truck motor, would you say that this is the best, cheapest way to get the low end hp or not?. The plan was to put a automatic trans, and keep it a 4x4. Will that trans work OK with strokker motor? This means a lot to me, thank you for your patients, i don't want to get on your nerves here but i just don't have the experience at this motor thing. i have a 1976 ford 4x4 3/4 ton pickup. It has a 360 motor, 4 speed, part-time 4wheel drive. It needs a lot of work to bring it back to restored. I was thinking of performance automotive warehouse (web site) to buy a 351W engine kit to put in it. I want at least 400 HP, but with the small block. I am not a motor head i just like to do my own work on my cars, brakes-plugs-etc. whatever goes wrong with all my cars i like to try to fix them myself, i have built a shop and have a lot or tools. I just want 0 to 70 mph as fast as i can get there on a budget. You know street light to streetlight, and to haul stuff around. I am restoring it now. I have started on it about a year now. What do you think? any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

  Well, first of all, the 351W engine kit won't fit into a 360 block.  They're just 2 different engines.  If power is what you're looking for, I'd try finding something like a 390 or 428 or 429.  First I'd try to find out what bigger motors came in your year and model of truck from the factory.  That would make a swap MUCH easier.  I suppose you could do a little work to the 360, but the aftermarket for those motors is next to nothing so I really doubt you'd ever see 400hp with the stock motor.  Hope this helps.

Steve    Sorry, I meant to say a block kit, which is a long block kit, i just put it together my self. So you think what ever bigger factory motor was in that year would be a easier swap? Why? You were too vague about specifics, be specific, you have all this experince, Please!.  Again I greatly appreciate your patients, and input, you are a ford man, right?. I am too old to keep working on this too long.

  Well, the swap would be easier mainly because you could always find a donor vehicle and just take the parts you needed off of that.  Say you found a wrecked '76 4X4 3/4 ton (no front end damage, though) that originally came with something like a 390.  All you need to do is to swipe everything you want off of that truck into yours and you'll know it's going to fit.  A 351W longblock kit might work...but I'm not sure I'd buy from PAW.  It's nothing personal against them, I've just never been impressed with the quality of their stuff.  It's cheap which is good in one way and bad in another.  If I were building 351W based motor I'd buy a bare 351W block, have it fully machined and clearenced for a stroker kit, and then punch it out to a 393...maybe to a 408.  With a decent cam and some mildly ported heads I'd say you'd be easily looking at over 400hp with something like that.  With some aftermarket heads (even the less expensive ones), decent intake and exhaust, I would be surprised to see 500hp.  Then again, if you're not looking at really pushing the motor the PAW kit might be the way to go.  I just don't see it lasting up to much abuse.

  Well...a stroker is exactly the same dimensionally.  It's just got a crankshaft with a longer stroke and different rods and pistons to match the crank.  Where it makes power depends a lot more on camshaft selection, intake manifold, and heads.  You could make it anything from a 9,000rpm screamer to a low rpm stump pulling torque monster.  It's just an easy way of getting more cubic inches from the same size block.  The block itself doesn't know it's a truck block, so there's no problem there.  And yes, I would go with a stroked 351W over a stock 390.  Some factory 390s were pretty impressive, but with the 351W you know exactly what went into it and what kind of power it should be making.

  Honestly, a C6 seems too big to me unless you're making seriously big power.  They suck up a lot more power than something like a C4.  Plus C4s can be built to hold up to just about any street driven small block.  That's really the way I'd go.  Maybe a mildly built C4...those are easy to come by and pretty cheap these days.

  The 351W is certainly one of the easiest Ford motors to modify.  I suppose "best" is a matter of opinion.  For my money the best Ford motors never saw any action in street cars...from 600hp SOHC 427s in the 60s that saw drag strip action to the 700hp+ quad turbo V12 that was in the GT90 concept car.  But 351W are definitely easy to come by, built pretty strong, and enjoy a big aftermarket.  The 390s are good motors from the factory, but it doesn't have anywhere close to the same selection of speed parts.  The onlt bigger motor that shares a good aftermarket would be the 428/460 family, but unless you're making ridiculous amounts of power it's hard to ignore how heavy those motors are.
