Auto Racing: white smoke at start up, head gasket problem, smog test

Question
In the past week my car temp gauge got real hot after a run.  I took it off the track and found my coolent had gotten low.  I filled it back up, replaced the radiator cap (the original was old and wasn't holding PSI) and everything seemed fine.  today I adjusted my valves, replaed the cap and roter, and found that after I turn the car off, if I restart it even after a few moments it will start to smoke white smoke, and quite a bit.  after a minute of driving everything is back to normal and she's already to drive again.  I think it might be my head gasket but I'm not sure.  I also took it down to try a smog test ad it came back a little high on CO amount. Any ideas?

Dan-

I think I'm in a marginal agreement that it's a head gasket problem.  I would, however, expect a bad gasket to continue pumping out white smoke while driving, especially when you're accelerating.  It could be a case of bad rings or a cracked block...but bad rings usually produce a blue-ish grey smoke and cracked blocks are relatively uncommon.  Plus if the problem were rings, they should give you trouble if you shut off and immediately restart the car.  All things considered, my money's on a bad head gasket.  Hope this helps.
