NASCAR Racing: 3 Nascar races without winners, grand national competition, brett bodine

Question
What can you tell me about the the 3 races with no winners

Answer
Hey Alan,

Well there is the race back in 1970, Bobby Allison claimed he won, but NASCAR wouldn't award it to him because at the time he was running a Grand American car and they were only allowed in the race because they needed more entries. (Hence the disputed 85th career win.) He asked them who the winner was in that race and they told him Richard Petty. He asked them then "Well wouldn't that have made his win at Dover in 1983 his 200th career win, and therefore his 84 Firecracker 400 win 201?" I don't know their response, but I don't think that Richard Petty is credited with that race either.

There's also another story that Brett Bodine's lone career win was because of a scoring error, and toward the end of the race that Darrell Waltrip (a lapped car) passed him to get back on the lead lap, where he would finish second. They ended the race as the only two cars on the lead lap. However, there are reports a power outage (I think) caused a scoring error and that there is speculation that DW was actually on the lead lap and his pass to get back on the lead lap was actually what should've been his pass for the win. Therefore Darrell Waltrip also would have 85 career wins.

Two other cases involve the 1971 Myers Brothers 250 and 1971 Wilkes 400. Both Bobby Allison and Tiny Lund (in order of respective races claim to have won) But both cars were deemed too small for Grand National Competition, but were used as field-fillers.

Hope I answered your question
