BMW Repair: 1999 323i acceleration prob., air flow meter, head gasket

Question
QUESTION: I first took my car to a "specialist" who changed my air flow system, O2, and a few hoses. The next day frim when i got my car it messed up again. I took it in again and this time he changed the fiuel pump. I have not gotten it back because now he is sayin my car turns on and drives but does not accelerates past a point. He said it could be the compresion but when he checked it it was at 120psi. He thinks i may havr to replace the engine but can not find the problrm. What could it be? Please help me. He has had my car for two weeks now.

ANSWER: Changing the engine is not the right idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously very expensive, get your car back and do 1 of 2 things.

Take it to someone else who are specialists in BMW's, or take it to the main BMW garage (dealers) and ask them to scan it and just diagnose the problem.

An hours labour to find out what the problem really is, will cost you 10% of the price of an engine.
Its probably a faulty sensor or wiring to the replaced air flow meter.

QUESTION: Tony you are very helpful. Thank you! I just got my car back last night and of course it does not run. I took it into him running, but he is stating I have a leak in the last three cylinders and that changing my motor is the only thing that could help. He initially quoted me for a cylinder misfire which he said he fixed by doing a tune up and cleaning the head gasket. He is saying the leaks are causing my car to loose compression. I only drove it for a day when it just would not run anymore. Is he right to try to charge me for a new motor and labor or should that issue been addressed the first time it was taken in? I believe this mechanic is trying to haggle me out of as much as possible and do not see any logic to what he is trying to do.

ANSWER: Ask him how he "cleaned the head gasket", we always replace them when the head comes off.You didnt mention he had the head off?

Get it to someone else to diagnose who works on German cars.I would do if for you but towing to Devon England would be a bit expensive.

QUESTION: Yes it would. Thank you for all your help Tony. He did have it off and after you said that i read over my estimate and he noted changing the gasket and cleaning everything inside. I honestly do not know what he did now and feel very taken advantaged by this "Certified BMW Specialist" that he called himself. I am going to try to find a person who works only on German cars. After all the money i spent on everything else he said i needed i am trying to avoid taking it to the dealership. Thank you very much again!

Answer
You must have some free legal advice over there, consumer fraud that sort of thing.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Possibly let him know that you are taking it "somewhere else",(dealer) and if it turns out he replaced the wrong parts, or "led you astray" that you will be seeking compensation. That works over here, he might see things in a new light!
