BMW Repair: Camshaft position sensor replacement, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor

Question
After replacing the camshaft position sensor on my 1996 BMW 328i, and erase the code, it returns after driving about 50 miles.  Any idea how to fix this problem?  I'm using an Innova code reader.

Thanks

Answer
Hi, had this problem myself recently on 2 different cars.

1st of all I hope you used a genuine camshaft sensor as replacing the after-market 1 that i installed with a factory 1 cured the problem.

Had a 1998 528i and my snap on scanner was looking at the CRANKSHAFT sensor and reporting the camshaft sensor.

I can only assume something got lost in translation fron German to "American".

Unplug the crankshaft sensor, the engine probably wont start, read the faults again, should say crankshaft sensor, if it still says camshaft then replace the crank sensor and remember to clear the faults every time you read them .

Good Luck.
