BMW Repair: 2001 BMW 320 Individual, bmw 320, battery icon

Hi, I was driving the above mentioned vehicle on the high way and it started loosing power till it came to a halt. I re-started the car and the intervals became shorter until it could not start anymore

I have replaced the battery and drove for a day and the following day it could not start. it displays a red battery icon on the screen. could it be an alternator?
Please help!!!

The battery light shows a difference between battery voltage and alternator voltage. The first thing to check would be the voltage at the battery with the engine running.
It should be between 12.5 and 14.5 volts with some consumers on,(headlights,wipers) If not then replacing the alternator would be the required procedure.Dont forget to disconnect the battery before replacing the alternator.
