BMW Repair: Timing Belt, camshaft lobes, m40 motor

Question
Hello there,

I have a question about setting the timing belt right for a e36 318i with the m40 motor. The one with the timing belt. I can't see any timing marks on the motor side. I put cylinder 1 at TDP but I don't know how to put the camshaft on time.

Hope that you can tell me how, thanks!

Answer
The camshaft is at TDC #1 when the camshaft lobes for number 1 are at the base for both intake and exhaust lobes. You must be careful when attempting this is the cylinder head is bolted on.BMW's if they jump time (either broken belt or having jump the timing chain) bends the valves.Mostly exhaust but either way it is a bad thing. You may want to purchase a repair manual.Bentleys are the best I've seen.
