BMW Repair: Overheating on BMW E39 520, bmw e39, coolant loss

I am the owner of a European BMW 520i A RL Model E39 Chassis # GZ31985 which recently succumbed to an overheating problem after having been out of use for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. I took it to a garage to be checked and was informed that the cylinder head has been damaged and needs to be replaced. I am informed that these heads cannot be repaired and must only be replaced. All checks reveal that every thing else is fine. My question is do I really have to change the head to repair the overheating issue.

If the head is cracked yes it would need to be replaced.It maybe resurfaced if it isn't too warped.As far as the over heating issues I would check to see what was mentioned more about the head replacement.If there is a massive coolant loss or coolant in the oil,then it needs to go further with repair and see if it is a gasket or if the head itself is cracked.A flat edge will help determine the flatness of the head.
Check to see if the fans are working correctly and the thermostat is ok,and no debris in between the a/c condenser and radiator as well.
