BMW Repair: PVC valve Freeze up on E39, engine hesitation, bmw 530i 2001

Question
I have a BMW 530I 2001 (made in June 2001) and on a 10 degree F day I driving home I noticed a major plume of white smoke out the exhaust (smelly) and then a engine hesitation and then die, not to restart.  I towed it home and removed a spark plug and noticed the cylinder to be filled with engine oil. I pulled all plugs out, turned over the ignition to remove oil also compressed air and rags until all was removed.  Reinstalled plugs and she fired right up and ran smooth except for the smoke out the exhaust pipe for 10 minutes and then next to no smoke.  The dealer says it is the Oil Separator/Crankcase Vent Valve/PCV Valve that froze in the cold weather and they have an insulating kit that will fix it. My question is how straight forward is the install of the kit yourself for a guy that can do minor mechanical repairs on cars?  Also, does the kit work to eliminate the freezing of this valve? Is there anything else a person should do besides the kit?

Answer
Not familiar with that kit, but know the part.

It's a fairly big, but straightforward project.  I'd recommend getting a Bentley e39 manual, and going for it.

While you're in there, if they haven't been done lately and you have a fair number of miles, I'd do the thermostat and waterpump.  Maybe the intake gaskets too.

You can do it with the Bentley.
