BMW Repair: ignition coil recall/TSB, m roadster, bremi

Question
Hi Evan,

I have a 2002 M3 convertible, build date 02/02, vin EX23073.  I had a coil go out earlier this year and my local independent shop replaced it with another Bremi.  I was reading some of the BMW boards, and found out that there's a TSB that covers this issue.  From what I can tell, my vehicle is within the time frame covered by the TSB, but my local dealer and BMW NA say I'm not covered by the "Campaign # 05E-A01" where they actually recalled certain vehicles and replaced all 6 coils.  I'm obviously having problems and my vehicle is within the range of the TSB, so why are they telling me "no" on the recall?  I tried to look at the actual documents, but Alldata doesn't have TSB's/recall notices for BMW any more, for some reason.  Do you know of anywhere else I can see TSB's and such?  Is that something you could email me?

Answer
Jim you are misinformed. Recall 05E-A01 does not apply to your S54 engine. Your car is not covered as you have different ignition coils than the M54/M56 engines. However there is an issue with the ignition coils in your vehicle and is known by BMW. Had you gone to the dealer they would have replaced all six coils. BMW has extended the warranty on the ignition coils from 4years/50,000miles to 8years/Unlimited mileage for your Bremi 260 coils. Service information for the dealership. Not enough cars are covered to perform a recall. M3 and M Roadster with S54 2001, 2002, 2003 are affected. If you could could get that coil and reinstall it, then go to the dealer with complaint you would get 6 updated coils. But if it doesn't happen again then I wouldn't worry about it. If you wish to pay for the coils the part number is 12 13 7 551 260.
