BMW Repair: bmw transmision, faulty memory, seperate issue

Question
I replaced my transmission in a 1997 740il twice. It wouldn't shift into gear. The gear shift is moving but the trans wouldn't move the car.  Also the brake lights are staying on even after i unplug the switch from the foot brake.  I've tried to read the ecu and i've got the error that the fail safe was on and i can erase that but i aslo get the 4th gear ratio incorrect and the speed sensor incorrect.  After replacing the trns twice i had the same problem with both.  I took the return line from the cooler and no fuild comes out.  I've tried to put more fuild in but when I take the fill bolt out it start draning fuild.  I can't add any more.  Would you be able to tell me what is wrong?

Answer
Felanda, the trans has to be filled with the engine running in park between 85-122F degrees to fill accuately. It is always a good idea to blow out the trans with compressed air to get all the old fluid out. As for the brake light problem I believe that is a seperate issue. We find a lot of faulty brake light switches but I don't work on early E38 cars very often. I would have the faulty memory and trans adaptations cleared at the dealer. You may need to have the trans control unit programmed.
