BMW Repair: 2002 318i stalling after refuelling, purge valve, vacuum line

Question
Hi

I have a 2002 318i Executive Model that has done 38,000k. I recently got the car serviced and the car was running perfectly. After the service I refuelled the car. About 2kms later- several warning lights came on and beeping was emmitted and the engine turned itself off and the car stalled. After about 2 minutes I was able to restart the car but the car was only able to run in emergency transmission mode. The car was driven back to the dealer where they reset the computer but were unable to determine the problem. The car ran well again until I re fill it with petrol where the same problem arises.

Answer
Sam, I would look at the Evaporative Emmissions system. Make sure the purge valve doesn't have raw fuel in it from the carbon canister or tank. It could be sticking open and letting fuel into the motor at an uncontrolled rate due to the system having liquid fuel in it as opposed to vapor as it should. Also Do not top off the tank after the automatic handle on the pump has released when refueling. This can flood the carbon canister an cause this problem. Pinch the Purge vacuum line to the intake manifold off and see if this problem perisits.
