BMW Repair: E39 draining battery, drawing 1, blower fan

Question
I have a 2001 530d SE, 72k miles which is draining the battery whilst parked. The car goes to sleep after 16 mins but is still drawing 1-6 amps (but sometimes up to 12 amps)intermittently. This is amps not milliamps. The fan for the heater/air conditioning keeps coming on for between 1 and 10 seconds and it does this every 5-30 seconds. I have tested the car 2 hours after it went to sleep and it is still doing this. When the fan is not on it is drawing 1-2 milliamps. I have removed the 2 fuses (numbers 9 & 20) that relate to the the heater & a/c but this does not stop the fan.
I have also found on a few occasions that after parking, the windows will completely mist up.
I assume the problem is the climate control but what is making the fan switch on.
I have no aftermarket devices.
Also, the rear parking distance sensor has stopped working.
Regards
Steve

Answer
Steve, please replace the final stage resistor for the A/C blower fan. I think I had a post to a guy named Wolfgang around the last week in August. Please research this topic for repair instructions. This replacement is very easy. Unplug the resistor and see if you current draw stays gone. This replacement can also be found on the internet forums and fan clubs with pictures.
