BMW Repair: BMW 1990 320 i cutting out, cv joints, wheels rims

Question
Hi Tino , My BMW 320 i 1990 model ( box shaped ) has a problem of cutting out in extreme hot weather . I would drive for about 20 minutes and as soon as i slow down or get to a traffic light , the car will cut-out . It cannot start again and I have to wait for about 10-15 minutes before it can go again . Will then go , but will still at times cut out . It also happenes when the car has been standing in hot weather . In normal weather and winter time this never happenes. My viscous fan has been replaced
recently as the car overheated in slow traffic , but was fine at normal speed . The car does not overheat anymore .
Could this be a faulty sensor?  There is also a knocking sound at low speed up to 40 km per hour , then disappears as I accellerate .When slowing down the knocking ( thumping sound ) will sound faster until it stops . I do not feel it on the steering nor on the pedals .Could this be rear cv joints?

Answer
Hello Hugo,
First things first: a) Is there a check engine light or
check control message in the dash? b) if there is a check engine light, it would be best if you could have it scanned and if you could tell me the results of the scan c)Where is the temperature gauge when the engine cuts out?d) Before the engine cuts out/before coming to a stop, is there a loss of power or knocking of the tappets/valves?
PLS.NOTE that this problem can be due to so many things
(fuel supply, engine electronics, faulty sensorslike cam sensors/oil level sensor/etc.).
Now re the thumping noise: a) Can you localize the approx.
position of the noise(front/rear/left/right/lower/upper)?
b)Most noises like this are due to the tire tread design
of sports tires(those with big v shaped treads and coarse
truck-like treads) c)I assume the thumping noise is not present when the car is not moving am I right? c) Sometimes the tires or wheels/rims are off-round but then you can feel this from the steering wheel. But then there are other possibilities. The more info you can give me
the better.
