BMW Repair: 1992 BMW 325 Convertable Top Switch, bmw 325 convertable, rubber mallet

Question
I recently bought a '92 325 convertable and one of the convertable top motors does not work. It's the one in the center of the trunk that drives the top cover latches. The other motor runs when the switch is engaged. The motor in question omed out at about 8, but the power feed wires both showed ground. I'm thinking that perhaps the switch or the wireing was damaged when the previous owner had a radio installed. Does this sound probable and how do I get the switch out to check it without damageing it? Thanks,Tim

Answer
Tim,
The switch should pop out with out any problems.  I would spray it with contact cleaner or carb/choke cleaner to clean the contacts inside the switch.
I suppose anything is possible when wiring things up, I seems that it would be hard to mess up the wiring of the motor with speaker wiring though.  It's possible that the motor is locked for some reason.  You could take a rubber mallet and tap on the motor while someone presses the switch, this might cause the motor to free-up.

 Good luck,
 Josh
