BMW Repair: Instrument Panel, phillips head screws, replaceable bulbs

Question
I have a 1999 540i and the instrument panel lights related to the odometer and the on-board computer are partially burned out.  What needs to be done to repair it?

Answer
I don't believe that those instrument clusters have replaceable bulbs, but you have to replace the whole assembly and then have it recoded to work specifically to your car. They are simple to remove. first, remove the wood trim from the dash on both sides of the steering wheel and there should be phillips head screws holding the trim around the instrument cluster. There should also be 2 torx screws holding the cluster to the dash. Be careful when you pull the cluster out because the wiring is rather short. you should be able to see the back of the cluster and see if the bulbs are replaceable
