GMC Repair: using oil, 2000 chevy cavalier, chevy cavalier

Question
Hi!
I bought my daughter a 2000 Chevy Cavalier, 2.4 liter auto, a couple years ago. I was told it was a good car with few mechanical issues, and so far so good.
Compared to my other vehicles, however, it seems to use quite a bit more oil. In fact when she first got it she drove it until the oil was almost empty, assuming it would be OK compared to her last car.
I checked it today and the oil was at the 'add' level. Last oil change was about four months ago. The  oil itself was still pretty clean. She doesnt put that many miles on it, mostly city driving. There are no leaks on the driveway.
Do you know if this is common for this vehicle/engine, or should I be concerned? Instead of going by the sticker I have told her to have it checked each time she gets fuel.
Instead of getting oil changes whenever it is low,  can I just top up the oil,  and only get a change when the oil is obviously deteriorating?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi
As long as there are no external leaks,
According to GM on that particular engine, " For the LN2 and L43 engines, oil consumption greater than 1 quart (0.9 L) within 2000 miles (3200 km) is considered excessive."
If your consumption is HIGHER than this, they have developed a new Valve cover, that addresses high oil consumption. (Reference Bulletin #01-06-01-030A)
Part # is 12570563.
Other than this, any other mechanical issue could cause oil consumption, including Pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls, valve stem guides, valves, etc....
Hope it helps
