GMC Repair: Crankshaft Position Sensors, engine oil leaks, 2001 oldsmobile aurora

Question
I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora with the 4.0 V8. I need to replace both of my Crankshaft Position Sensors. Where are these located and what special instructions or tools will I need? It has 125k miles and this will be the 3rd time they have been replaced (2 times by previous owner). Could there be something wrong that is causing them to go out or is this a common problem?

Answer
hi
here is the exact procedure from GM service
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the oil filter adaptor.
Remove the crankshaft sensor electrical connector. Remove the crankshaft sensor retaining bolt.
Remove the crankshaft sensor.
Important: Inspect the crankshaft sensor O-ring for wear or damage. If a problem is found, replace the O-ring.

Lubricate the crankshaft sensor O-ring with clean engine oil.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the crankshaft sensor and the retaining bolt.
Tighten

Tighten the retaining bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

Install the crankshaft sensor electrical connector.
Install the oil filter adaptor.
Lower the vehicle.
Operate the engine and inspect crankshaft sensor for engine oil leaks.
Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure .
I do not see any bulletins that say this was a problem.
Check all the wiring.
Connectors, wires etc...
I Hope this helps.
